What did you earn today?

Last week @MarkFairbanks and I had the esteemed honor of participating in Seth Godin’s Medicine Ball Sessions. I call it an honor because it truly was. Not only because we got the opportunity to engage with Seth for 3 full days and learn what’s in his head, but the people that were in attendance were amazing. They came from all walks of life, all types of experience but with one thread that wove us all together; a willingness to see see things differently, own it and do something with it.

Innovation

Innovation has become both the holy grail and an overused buzz word in today’s society. Turn any direction and you hear and see businesses, leaders, and people touting their dedication to innovative products, processes and general ways. It is a noble focus. The world is better with energy being funneled to something like innovation rather than a slew of other goals.

But I wonder if we don’t fall victim to defining innovation in the wrong way…

The habit of empty pixel grazing

There’s a scene from Sam Shepard’s 1978 play Curse of the Starving Class that has stuck with me for many years. Characters randomly open the refrigerator door and blankly stare at the contents, only to close the door after a moment without removing anything. We’re not really hungry—we just look to see if there’s anything in the fridge that might interest us, even if we looked just ten minutes before. I believe there’s a entirely new digital form of this now, something which I refer to as empty pixel grazing.
