Filtering Noise

It’s interesting to me how once a topic surfaces, it seems to shake itself out in a variety of places. That’s what seems to have happened around the topic RSS for me. Last week at Translator lab hours we landed in an interesting discussion about RSS and the collective’s use of the tool. At a presentation @suespaight and I were lucky to be a part of last Friday at @c2gps, the question was asked whether RSS was a viable “tactic” anymore. And over the weekend, my friend @raffel launched a blog entry about his use of RSS and instruction on how to make the most of it. Check out the post… it’s really good.

While the discussion and questions focused around the technology of RSS and the option as it stands, I think the broader debate is our want, need and ability to filter the overwhelming amount of information available today.

Speed Sketching: A valuable lesson from Mike Rohde

This past Saturday, I attended the very cool DrawCamp series of seminars on all things drawing held at BucketWorks. A very enthusiastic James Carlson introduced the event as an “Unconference,” that is, one in which attendees volunteer to lead and teach one of the 45 minute segments scheduled throughout the day. It was inspiring to see the big turnout (including lots of kids- #ubercool) at yet another creative gathering that’s making Milwaukee a great community to live and work in.

UnGeeked – Behind the Scenes with the Mastermind

For those of us that attended UnGeeked, we know what an amazing event it was. The effects are still lingering in the community, and for the better. We all have one person to thank for it. You know her as @thatwoman_is, but Cd is much more than a Twitter handle. She is the brains, and brawn behind the event. I wanted to know (cuz I’m curious like that) what UnGeeked was like for her, and the “whys” that drove this vision. Thankfully I was able to steal some of Cd’s time to chat, and wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.

WWW stands for Why, Who, Where

None other than Ralph Waldo Emerson is said to have coined the phrase “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door.” This metaphor about the power of innovation has stood the test of time, but I wonder if it’s showing some serious post digital threads.

The brief history of digital has pretty much been about building better mousetraps. One-off sites that marketeers either drove users to via paid media and SEO. But isn’t it about time we started using it as a web instead of a mousetrap?

Give me something. Please.

Seth Godin had a fabulous post today expounding the frustation with talking a lot but not saying anything. If you haven’t seen it, you should. And you should take it to heart and use the lesson as a lens through which you write anything. Mainly because it is an epidemic and should really be stopped.

In non-coincidental fashion, after reading Mr. Godin’s post and agreeing I open an email, and cringed.
